I felt it was just a typical Indian pitch (better than the Chennai Test 2) but with pink ball just produced a poisonous cocktail. Pink ball hasn't really been used much in India and pink ball tests in general are in their infancy compared to the rest of the game. I suppose it would take some time to figure out what kind of pitches you need to produce a competitive pink ball test match in all conditions or conversely, what improvements/changes need to be made in the ball, much like how cricket grappled with DRS early last decade (I feel it's much more stabilized and less controversial right now). Maybe ICC would need to step in to standardise some aspects of the ball if not have just one manufacturer like the white Kookaburra.

Your story about your encounter with the curator reminds me of when Mick Hunt, now retired Lord’s groundsman advised Mohammad Azharuddin to bowl first in the 1990 test...two days later India were still bowling

Ours was the home curator, so I hope he was at least trying to help but got it terribly wrong.

Mick was trying to be helpful too...just got it terribly wrong. I meant that even the curators never 100% know what it’s going to do.

How much of the chat has turned to the pitch because none of these tests have been all that exciting? Yes, each test has had good performances from one or two players, but outside of that they've all been fairly predictable by the end of day 1?

Turned (pun intended). This Test didn't feel that predictable on day one. Teh second Test did. I actually felt this was failry enjoyable.
